How we apply our paint systems

The largest factor in the lifespan of your paint system is how it’s applied and the prep work that goes into the new system. Failing to do the appropriate prep work before the paint application is the primary reason paint systems fail too soon. Each type of painted surface can require its own unique preparation and application. Here is a general outline of what we do to ensure you get the highest longevity out of your new paint system.

  1. Power wash/clean the painted surfaces.
  2. Scrape and lightly sand bare wood areas or peeling paint as needed.
  3. Caulk all joints on wood siding and trims; refasten visible loose nails; apply caulking on exposed nails and wall penetrations; caulk joints around windows and doors.
  4. Apply masking over windows, doors, lights, and other items that are not being painted.
  5. Apply primer over any bare wood before painting.
  6. Apply the new main color to the exterior siding with a sprayed application. Accent colors may be sprayed or brushed/rolled depending on the size and location.
  7. Apply the new trim paint with a brush/roller.
  8. Clean up any debris and remove waste.
  9. We always leave the homeowner with any remaining paint for future touch ups or repairs.

FAQ

Do we paint vinyl siding?

We do not recommend painting vinyl siding. Painting vinyl siding will void the manufacturer warranty for most vinyl siding systems. Vinyl siding is susceptible to warping and distortion with heat. Painting vinyl siding and other similar vinyl products can result in the siding absorbing more heat from the sun than the product can withstand. This causes the siding to warp and distort, requiring replacing the siding system.

What type of stain do we recommend for wood siding or wood decks?

For siding and deck stains, there are three categories of the look of the stain, transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stain. Transparent and semi-transparent stains are commonly applied to new or well-maintained wood products. Transparent and semi-transparent stains allow all or some natural wood tones to show through the stain. Conversely, solid stains provide a uniform opaque finish and are a great option to provide a uniform look to the wood. We recommend a solid stain be applied to severely weathered or poorly maintained wood products.

Can exterior paint be applied in the winter in Colorado?

Exterior paint can be applied in the winter. However, there are many factors to consider when doing this. Most Sherwin-Williams paint products we apply can be installed at 35 degrees. We prefer to have at least 40 degrees and rising for the day for the best application.
